To better serve users, align with mainstream industry practices, and meet actual needs for data backup, OceanBase Cloud will optimize the commercialization strategy for Backup and Restore, effective at 00:00 (UTC+8) on April 8, 2026. The specific adjustments are as follows.
Adjustment to free backup quota
Background
The original free quota strategy varied across different cloud providers and channels and included time restrictions. To provide a more unified and user-friendly free quota experience, OceanBase Cloud will simplify the free storage quota for Backup and Restore.
Adjustment details
| Channel | Original strategy | New strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Alibaba Cloud Direct Channel | Free if: Data backup usage ≤ 2×N, Log backup usage ≤ 0.5×N, and retention period ≤ 15 days | Uniformly adjusted to: Total usage of "Data Backup + Log Backup" ≤ Single Replica Storage Capacity x 100% (Retention period restriction is removed) |
| Other Cloud Provider Channels (via OceanBase Cloud) | Free if: Total usage of "Data Backup + Log Backup" ≤ Single Node Storage Capacity × 0.5, and retention period ≤ 7 days |
Notes:
- Single replica storage capacity: In 1-1 and 1-1-1 deployment modes, single replica storage capacity equals the storage capacity of a single node. In N-N and N-N-N deployment modes, single replica storage capacity equals the per-node storage capacity multiplied by N.
- No time limit within free quota: As long as the total capacity does not exceed the free quota, backup data can be retained for the long term without expiration charges.
- Excess charges: Usage exceeding the free quota will be billed according to standard pricing (refer to the official website pricing page for detailed billing standards).
Adjustment goals
- Eliminate strategy differences across various cloud environments to provide a consistent free experience.
- Remove time restrictions, allowing more flexibility in managing long-term backups.
Adjustment to default retention policy for backups in the instance recycle bin
Background
Currently, when an instance is released, its backup data is retained permanently in the recycle bin by default. This may lead to unnecessary storage costs and management overhead. To optimize resource utilization, OceanBase Cloud will adjust the default retention period.
Adjustment details
| Item | Original strategy | New strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Backup retention policy after instance release | Permanently retained after instance release | Default retention of 7 days after instance release. The system will automatically clean up data retained for more than 7 days. |
Notes:
- This adjustment applies only to instances newly purchased after 00:00 (UTC+8) on April 8, 2026.
- For existing instances purchased before this time, the original "permanent retention" policy remains. If a unified adjustment is needed later, OceanBase Cloud will notify users via official website announcements and/or in-platform messages with at least 30 days' advance notice. Users may choose to download backups or retain them during this notice period.
- If you have requirements for long-term backup retention, it is recommended to download backups to local storage or archive them by other methods in advance. OceanBase Cloud assumes no responsibility for recovery if backup data in the instance recycle bin is lost due to failure to download or transfer it in a timely manner.
Effective date and scope
- Effective date: 00:00 (UTC+8) on April 8, 2026
- Scope of application:
- Free backup quota adjustment: Applies to all existing instances and instances newly purchased after 00:00 (UTC+8) on April 8, 2026, including the Alibaba Cloud direct channel and other cloud provider channels via OceanBase Cloud.
- Recycle bin backup retention policy adjustment: Applies only to instances newly purchased after 00:00 (UTC+8) on April 8, 2026. Existing instances will not be adjusted at this time.
- If you do not agree with these adjustments, you may discontinue using the OceanBase Backup and Restore service before 24:00 (UTC+8) on April 7, 2026. If you continue to use the service after the effective date, you will be deemed to have understood and agreed to the new policies.
Important reminders
- Automatic quota upgrade: After the new policy takes effect, your instances will automatically enjoy the new free quota without any manual operation required.
- Backup capacity monitoring: It is recommended to monitor your total backup capacity. You can view current backup storage usage via the Backup page for your instance in the OceanBase Cloud console to assess storage needs reasonably and avoid exceeding the free quota.
- Long-term backup retention: For backup data requiring long-term retention, download it or transfer it to other storage services promptly before releasing the instance.
- Inquiries: If you have any questions, contact technical support (400-109-0633) or your account manager.
