Basic concepts
Before you perform a secondary backup, you need to understand the following basic concepts:
Source backup location: indicates the backup destination specified by the
backup_destconfiguration item.Destination backup location: indicates the backup destination specified by the
backup_backup_destconfiguration item.Secondary backup: indicates the process of transferring data from the source backup location to the destination backup location.
Secondary backup on logs: indicates the process of transferring logs stored at the source backup location to the destination backup location.
Secondary backup on data: indicates the process of transferring data backups stored at the source backup location to the destination backup location.
Log splitting: indicates the process of splitting log backups into multiple backup pieces based on a specified interval. Each backup piece is then stored in a different directory.
Backup interruption: indicates a situation in which the secondary backup of logs in a backup round is not possible because the log backups in the source backup location are cleared.
Backup piece: indicates a group of files in a data backup or a log backup.
Backup round: indicates a complete round of backup data streams. If splitting is performed, a backup round contains multiple backup pieces. Otherwise, a backup round contains only one backup piece.
Constraints
When you perform a secondary backup, ensure that at least one valid backup copy exists in the source backup location.
